DESERT ESCAPES

In Rajathan, India's most colourful state, there is a desert triangle of Jodhpur, Bikaner & Jaisalmer. All these three towns boast of some unique properties, which can be an ideal base for the visitors to explore the desert life and culture.

Transport yourself into a bygone royal era by indulging in a camel safari in the rustic desertland of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. There are many opportunities in the desert land to enjoy such safaris to traverse its golden sands along with a stay at camps in the Thardesert. Often, fortified cities of Jodhpur, Bikaner, Shekhawati and Pushkar combine an entire trail.

The name Jaisalmer evokes utter magic and vibrancy of the desert. It's straight out of an Arabian Nights fable. The hostile terrain notwithstanding the warmth and colour of people is simply overwhelming. One of the main draws is the daunting 12th century Jaisalmer Fort. The beautiful havelis which were built by wealthy merchants of Jaisalmer are yet another interesting aspect of the desert city. And you can let your eyes caress the sloping sand dunes while you ramble your way in a camel safari. The desert citadel is truly a golden fantasy in the Thar Desert. Bhati Rajput ruler RawalJaisal, after whom the city finds its name, founded Jaisalmer in 1156 AD.

In Gujarat, the desert region can be divided into two parts - the great desert and the little desert. The great desert extends from the edge of the Rann of Kuchch beyond the Luni River northward. The whole of the Rajasthan-Sind frontier runs through this. The little desert extends from the Luni between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur up to the northern wastes. Between the great and the little deserts lies a zone of absolutely sterile country, consisting of rocky land cut up by limestone ridges.

The Little Rann of Kutch, blanketed by the deep silences that fall on the salt flats. Looking out at the unending flats you appreciate the greenery and rich wildlife that congregates on the beyts or islands that rise up out of the Rann. Getting to know the desert do you begin to understand a secret, that the beauty of life lies hidden in even the most seemingly desolate of places. The Wild Ass Sanctuary of the Little Rann of Kutch, spreading across nearly 5000 square kilometers of the Little Rann, is the only place on earth where the endangered Indian Wild Ass, still lives.

The Desert National Park is situated in the West Indian state of Rajasthan near Jaisalmer. This is one of the largest national parks, covering an area of 3100 sq. km. The desert sanctuary being a fragile ecosystem has its own flora and fauna.Birdlife in this sandy habitat is vivid & spectacular. The great Indian bustard is another magnificent bird found in relatively fair numbers. It migrates locally in different seasons. The region is a haven for migratory and resident birds of the desert. One can see many eagles, harriers, falcons, buzzards, kestrel and vultures. Short- toed eagles, tawny eagles, spotted eagles, lagger falcons and kestrels are the commonest of these. Sandgrouses are spotted near small ponds or lakes. Sea shells and massive fossilized tree trunks in this park record the geological history of the desert. You can taste the delights of the Indian monsoon anywhere in the country on a camel safari in the Rajasthan desert when nature comes alive and the peacocks dance.
