CHHAT PUJA

Chhat Puja, the ancient Hindu festival dedicated to the God of Sun (Surya) is celebrated in various part of India during the month of November to thank Surya for sustaining life and energy on earth and also request for forgiveness and compassion as well as wishes.

The celebrations include a period of four days. During these four days the devotees do holy bathing, maintain a strict fast with no water and food during the day, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (Vratta), standing in water for long periods of time, prayer offering including flowers and small diyas (earthen lamps), and Sandalwood with other spices are offered to the Sun God.

Chhat Puja is celebrated in several parts of India like West Bengal, Assam, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, this last one is considered the most popular place.
